Mesothelioma and Work Exposure

People who work with asbestos litigation are at higher risk of developing mesothelioma. Construction workers, firefighters and military veterans are at a higher risk.

The lining of the lung (pleural mesothelioma) or the abdomen, is the primary mesothelioma's primary site. In rare instances, it may affect the heart or testicles.

Symptoms

The tissues that line your lungs, stomach and the heart are known as mesothelium. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that develops in the mes when cells start to grow out of control. Asbestos may cause mesothelioma by causing DNA damage in cells. The damaged cells reproduce and the cancer spreads over time. It is not clear what other factors cause mesothelioma. Researchers have discovered asbestos exposure is a common factor in mesothelioma. Exposure can happen both directly and secondhand.

The most frequent mesothelioma form begins in the tissue around each lung (the Pleura). Less often, it starts in the lining of the abdomen (the peritoneum) or in other areas of the body.

Early mesothelioma is usually not uncomfortable or painful. They can include a persistent cough, difficulty breathing, weight loss, abdominal pain and fever. As tumors grow they can cause pain to nerves and organs. Some forms of mesothelioma can be aggressive, but even those that are the most serious are more likely to respond to treatment than other cancers, such as breast or colon cancer.

Mesothelioma is a rare disease, so patients may be unable to establish a diagnosis. The early symptoms of mesothelioma are often mistakenly identified as other diseases.

A doctor will conduct an examination of your body and ask for a detailed medical history and employment. They will ask if have ever been exposed to asbestos, since mesothelioma most often occurs from breathing in asbestos fibers. These irritate lungs and can cause irritation and inflammation, which can lead to mesothelioma.

Chest X-rays and CT scans are helpful in locating the mesothelioma. They can also show if there is fluid buildup between the lungs or other areas of the chest wall.

These tests can also be used to check for symptoms of mesothelioma in other areas of the body. Mesothelioma can be spread to lymph nodes, which may cause lumps in the abdomen and neck. A biopsy is required to confirm the diagnosis of mesothelioma.

Diagnosis

The only way to determine mesothelioma is by taking a biopsy of the tissue affected. A biopsy is the process of removing a small sample of tissue and then examining it under a microscope in order to check for cancerous cells. A biopsy is typically performed by a specialist surgeon, and is possible to perform via VATS (video assisted thoracoscopic surgery) or CT-guided biopsies.

Mesothelioma affects the thin layer of tissue that covers organs within the body. The majority of cases of mesothelioma can be traced back to prior asbestos compensation exposure, a grouping of heat-resistant minerals fibres which were utilized in the manufacture and construction industries prior to when they were banned in the 1970s. Asbestos exposure is most often experienced when working in fields such as shipbuilding, mining or building. Mesothelioma is more common among those who have worked in these industries or their families.

There are four mesothelioma types depending on the place where the tumour formed. The majority of mesothelioma cases develop in the tissue that lines the lungs and chest wall, which is known as the pleura. Pleural mesothelioma, the most frequent mesothelioma form and accounts for around 80% of cases. Peritoneal mesothelioma, a rare type of mesothelioma that affects the abdominal lining. Pericardial mesothelioma, a rare form of mesothelioma that is found in the lining around the heart.

Symptoms of mesothelioma can resemble those of other illnesses and conditions, making it difficult to diagnose. The disease can take up to 50 years before symptoms appear. It's hard to determine how often to monitor symptoms or how to detect early signs of the disease.

Past exposure to asbestos is the main risk factor for mesothelioma, but other factors such as smoking, genetics and age can also increase a person's chance of developing the condition. Several studies have suggested that a specific method of X-rays in the workplace may also increase a person’s likelihood of developing mesothelioma. However, this has not yet been proven. A family history of mesothelioma or other asbestos-related diseases also increases the risk.

Treatment

Mesothelioma, a cancerous growth that occurs in the linings that protect certain organs, is a rare form of cancer. It is most common in the abdomen or lungs however it can also affect the tissues of the heart or tests. There are several different types of mesothelioma and each kind has its own distinct symptoms.

Epithelioid mesothelioma is by far the most common type, making up 60% to 70% of diagnosed cases. Sarcomatoid mesothelioma is the more severe form of mesothelioma accounting for 10% to 15%. Biphasic mesothelioma is a combination of epithelioid and sarcomatoid cells, and it occurs in 30% to 40% of cases. In rare cases, a genetic mutation can cause mesothelioma. Anyone who have a family history of mesothelioma should consult their physician about genetic tests to determine their risk for the disease.

Prognosis

Like all cancers, mesothelioma is caused by mutations in the cell's genetic code that allow it to grow in a way that is not controlled. These cells grow to form the form of a tumor. Scientists don't know what causes mesothelioma but they do know that asbestos exposure increases the risk. People who work in blue-collar occupations or the Navy are at the highest risk of developing mesothelioma. Exposure increases the risk of developing mesothelioma which is the most prevalent form. This kind of mesothelioma may be found in the linings of the lung, but it may also occur in the linings of the abdomen (peritoneum), or heart (pericardium).

The symptoms of pleural Mesothelioma might not show up for 10 to 50 years. They can include chest pain, breathing problems and difficulty. Mesothelioma can also cause fluid accumulation in the lungs, which leads to inflammation of the tissues surrounding the lungs.

If a person has symptoms of mesothelioma, they must see a doctor as soon as is possible. This will help doctors identify the condition before it gets worse and get patients to treatment sooner. It is important to tell doctors about any history of asbestos exposure.

Asbestos-related diseases typically affect older adults, primarily men and those assigned male at birth. These groups were more likely to work in blue-collar jobs or in the Navy prior to asbestos regulations.
